Recreational Opportunities

The Wee Thump Joshua Tree Wilderness is a good place to go birding, and a good place to enjoy walking through a dense stand of Joshua Trees. There is one designated trail in the Wilderness: the Eldorado Trail. Originally a wagon road serving the mining region of the Eldorado Mountains some 25 miles to the northeast around Nelson, NV, the three mile section in the Wilderness now serves as a hiking and walking trail. To find it, drive west from Searchlight, NV on highway 164 approximately 11.5 miles to a highway pullout on the north side of the road. Follow a dirt road about 50 feet beyond the pullout to a turnaround and park. You'll need to cross through a barbed wire fence. The trail goes about 400 feet north from the turnaround to connect with the historic wagon trail, and then goes east. The trail parallels highway 164, so expect to hear some highway traffic.
