The United States Congress designated the Shellback Wilderness (map
) in 2006 and it now has a total of 36,147 acres
All of this wilderness is located in Nevada
and is managed by the Forest Service.
The Shellback Wilderness is in the Northeast White Pine Range. It is a long ridge reaching over 9000 feet. The West side has spring fed basins with aspen stands and linear limestone formations. The West is more arid with Pinion Juniper Forests and some deep rocky canyons. The area is south of highway 50, one hour West of Ely.
